2022 Kentucky Derby winner: Rich Strike (80-1) is upset as the biggest underdog champion since 1913

In a truly shocking upset, Rich Strike is the winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby. Rich Strike closed at 80 to 1, the longest odds among the 20 horsepower. This is the first Kentucky Derby victory for trainer Eric Reed and jockey Sonny Leon.

It’s the second biggest upset in the Kentucky Derby’s 148-year history. The first was Donerail, who won in 1913 after closing as a 91-1 longshot.

The finish was thrilling as Rich Strike came from behind in the dying moments to win by 3/4 length over second-placed Epicenter and third-placed Zandon.

Summer is Tomorrow initially led the race, but Crown Pride took the lead at the 3/4 mile mark. Epicenter and Zandon then stormed up front in what looked like a two-horse finish – until Rich Strike came out of nowhere to pass them both. Here is the full race, a race so wild you have to see it to believe it.

Despite winning, Rich Strike was close to not competing at all. The horse was only added to the peloton on Friday after Ethereal Road was dropped. But while most were counting on Rich Strike, trainer Eric Reed – who said he “almost passed out” immediately after the race – knew he had a chance.

“[This] is the reason everyone does that, because we’re not supposed to be here, but I knew that horse loved the track and he had trained so well all year,” Reed told NBC Sports.

Reed’s father, Herbert, fought back tears while explaining how he felt about Rich Strike’s miraculous victory.

“Incredible,” said Herbert Reed. “I can’t even explain it. It’s unreal.”
